Why are Jewish leaders referred to as Rabbis when the Bible refers to them as Priests?

because back then they were called priests. then when Jesus Christ came to Earth all those who remaind Jews remained rabbis and those who converted to Christianity became priests because they couldnt both be called rabbis...ur both rabbis but ur a different religion?
